Seattle an Everyone a Changemaker City
In late 2009, Ashoka selected Seattle to build the model for an Everyone a Changemaker™ City, where people respond quickly and effectively to social challenges and where each individual has the freedom, confidence and societal support to address social problems and create change.
Ashoka Fellows Nomination and Support
Ashoka Fellows are leading social entrepreneurs who have innovative solutions to social problems and the potential to change patterns across society. They demonstrate unrivaled commitment to bold new ideas and prove that empathy, creativity, and collaboration are tremendous forces for change. Locally, Ashoka works to nominate Fellows in the region and connect them to needed resources and opportunities with other local social entrepreneurs.
Tipping the Youth Culture: Changemaker Schools and Youth Venture
Ashoka recognizes that young people play an important role in shaping community priorities and creating social change. In Seattle, local partners help Ashoka encourage and invest in the next generation of Changemakers.
Ashoka’s goal is to “tip” the local youth culture by growing the number of young people who recognize their own capacity to create and drive change.
Youth Venture: Based on the observation that most Ashoka Fellows shared the common trait of enacting change at an early age, Youth Venture was formed to create a global movement of young Changemakers by inspiring, investing in, and empowering youth to become entrepreneurs and address the most pressing social needs of our region. By providing guidance, coaching, workshops, and up to $1,000 in seed funding to people ages 12 to 20, Youth Venture helps youth combine their passions and aptitudes with real-world social entrepreneurship skills that will prepare them to be Changemakers long into the future. In Seattle, Ashoka’s partners deliver Youth Venture programming in a variety of formats.
Changemaker Schools: The Changemaker Schools Network is a national community of leading elementary schools that serve as models for cultivating these skills in students. Schools in the network share best practices with each other and benefit from opportunities to collaborate with other schools, connect with Ashoka's partners, present at conferences, and more. Seattle has three Changemaker Schools:
o Lake Forest Park Elementary
o St. Madeline de Sophie
o John Sanford International School
Ashoka Support Network
The Ashoka Support Network is a global community of successful business people who share the belief that entrepreneurs are the primary engine for economic and social development. They engage with Ashoka, committing time and resources to support the work of social entrepreneurs. The continuously expanding ASN network engages entrepreneurs from all industries.
Ashoka develops the network locally by connecting to Seattle’s thriving community of entrepreneurs and business leaders. Members have the opportunity to get involved with the transformative work of Fellows and diverse working groups around the world.
